Have you tested this. So giving them 1 colony ship kinda flicks a switch that makes them build colony ships then?

Yes, this would be handy!

I tested it without success. I gifted a colony ship to a minor and it just sat there until I eventually just wiped the minor out. Others seem to have had better luck with it. Perhaps I gifted one outside of their range. Perhaps too many of the planets were already colonized. I'm not sure.

Bottom line is that it has potential, but I have no conclusive results.

I have seen minors colonize on their own, but it was usually very contained and slow.

an aside:

it is with mixed feelings that i announce Orson Scott Card has just made my black list. he wrote the Ender's Game series, which is unfortunately brilliant writing. so, why is an acclaimed science fiction writer on my "i'll f**k you up if i ever meet you in a dark alley" list? well, it turns out he's a goat-f***ng bigoted fanatical homophobe who believes the US people should overthrow the government to prevent legalization of gay marriage.

a sad day for nerdy queers everywhere.

Kinda shows how quacked out he is to think he has a right to revolution. He needs to spend more time in his fantasy universe since he can't cope with this one.

btw: I have never read Ender's Game nor any other of his that I know of, so I guess boycotting his work wouldn't change much for me .

I'll never understand why people care so much about not giving gays equal rights. It's like banning marriages to blonds.....

(Maybe a few aliens mixed inbetween to run tests on us. aka, Mice  ) gay is a word and straight is a word. It would be a HUGE step to gobal peace and equality. In truth an HUGE step for civilized Humanity.

Like DethAdder, I haven't read that series either, but will continue my boycott.

If Mr. Card thinks he can overthrow our government with this as his base, he's in an appropriate field writing fantasy books. Perhaps his perception is blurred between the real world and the ones he created in his own image.

you know, i actually have a somewhat unusual view on marriage for a queer person. i view marriage as a tradition rooted in religion, and as such it should remain a ceremony between you, the person you love, and your spiritual organization. the government's involvement (here in the US at least) is mainly for the sake of determining tax rates and other rights.

i believe that people working towards a common domestic economy and/or raising a child should get the rights and benefits they do without having to declare themselves married. they would prove cohabitation and roles as co-parents, sign any necessary agreements and consent forms and whatnot, get their rights and privileges, and that'd be that.

and as to the ceremony and social status of marriage, if you want to belong to a church, temple or mosque that refuses to perform marriage rituals for people of the same sex (or for that matter, certain races or whatever), well, you've got that right. i believe you should have the right to remain bigoted if that's what fries your taco, but you should also have a civic duty to shut up about it when in public (the same way i turn my stereo down at 10pm). and on the other side of the coin, if i wanted to get married in a christian church, i'm sure i can find one that would not only be happy to marry me to a man, but eager, proud and excited.

but that's just my "in a perfect world" scenario. the winds of social progress aren't blowing that way, so ultimately i support a form of "progress" that reinforces a social structure i think is flawed in the first place, because it's a battle we're much more likely to win (and that we are in fact winning).

...but yeah, i was mostly disappointed to learn about OSC. i really liked Ender's Game. if you know a friend who has it i'd still recommend reading it. i read a great response to the news yesterday that went something like, "i believe art stands on its own merits. who while i won't buy anything else with his name on it, i'll still enjoy my copies of Ender's Game and the other books." my reply was, "good point, and having produced good aren't doesn't excuse you from your flaws by any means. it certainly wouldn't stop me from pounding on his face if i met him in a dark alley. or at least convincing him that the Jahovah's Witnesses of Gaydom had decided to convert his kids."

Well said Dystopic. I dont think government should be involved in marriage either, except for the necessary financial aspects. I'm proud to live in the first U.S. state that legalized civil unions for same-sex people. I've got a fair number of GLBT friends, some of whom have been "unionized", as we tend to call it here.

I too think marriage is a very personal thing, and if/when my gf and I get married we're just going to get the paperwork done, and then have a big party with friends and family. No elaborate stress-inducing ceremony, religious aspects, or fussy old-fashioned rituals.

Ender's Game was a great book, the other books in the series were allright, and I do like some of his other books, but it definitely does lower my opinion of Card to know about his ridiculously intolerant views.

I do believe same sex marriage is legal here, I think, It does'nt apply to me so I am not totally positive. I do know women can go topless however.   But you should see the ones that are doing it
